  1. Homer is considered the author of two major Greek epics, the Iliad  and 
  2. the Odyssey , written between the 10th and 8th centuries B.C. Some 
  3. scholars question whether the epics were created by Homer. Still, the 
  4. works are regarded as the beginnings of all Greek literature, including 
  5. philosophy. Homer influenced many later epic poets of Western 
  6. literature, including Virgil, John Milton and James Joyce.
